Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself through artwork. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house of one of the jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
